Es Castell
Situated just outside Mahon at the mouth of the port, lies Es Castell - the most easterly town in Spain. Originally named Georgetown by the British, then Villacarlos by the Spanish, Es Castell is steeped in military history and is, today, a busy and thriving town with an abundance of good shops, bars and restaurants.
The town centre is built around the main square, the Placa de S'Esplanada, which was once the parade ground for the military barracks which were built here in the late 18th century. A large clocktower dominates the square and it is also here that you will find the town hall and the Menorca Military Museum. During the evening the square comes to life with children playing happily and safely in the playgrounds, while adults relax with a beverage at one of the bustling and friendly bars. This is a great place to sit and chat, as residents mingle with visitors, creating a vibrant social atmosphere.
Es Castell is framed by two attractive coves, Cales Fonts and Calas Corb, the most appealing of which is Cales Fonts - a short stroll from the square and a must on any visit to Es Castell. It is here you will find a pretty harbour with stunning views across to the island of Illa del Llatzeret, once an isolation hospital and now a private holiday retreat for employees of the Spanish Health Service! It is a truly magnificent setting for a stroll or meal with a number of bars, restaurants and shops built into harbourside caves providing a magical, yet relaxing ambience. From the harbour at Calas Fonts you can take a boat trip to Mahon or just sit and marvel as the cruise ships and ferries pass on their way in and out of Menorca. Cales Fonts is a wonderful place to go in the evening and truly comes alive at that time. You can browse in the many shops hidden in the caves and then sit at any of the numerous restaurants and have a fabulous meal whilst watching the world go by!
There are several first class hotels around Es Castell, together with apartments and villas to rent. While there is no beach, save for a small inlet at nearby Sol del Este, there are many to discover within easy reach by car and Mahon is just a few minutes drive away.
All in all Es Castell is a delightful mix of old and new, relaxation and entertainment, and is great town to stay in or visit for a day while holidaying in Menorca.
