Finally, after two years of fiestas not being allowed on the island, Ciutadella hosts the first one of the year starting on 23rd June 2022. So lovely to see the beautiful horses again.

Our New Home 2012
Well, after the panic towards the end of last year, in finding a new home, we are now settled in the lovely village of Cala’n Porter, or Cala en Porter (whichever you prefer).
Cala’n Porter in winter is nothing like Cala’n Porter in summer. Apart from it being much colder (it is currently trying to snow!) the majority of the shops close over winter. A number of bars/restaurants are still open but certainly not buzzing with people, as they are during summer.
It will soon be time to start organising the annual Spring cleans for the properties we look after – there is something quite nice about bringing back to life a villa, or apartment, that has been hibernating over winter. It’s amazing how different they look, and feel, during the winter months.
Martin still has his pools to look after during the winter though only one visit a week is necessary. He looks after a number of gardens also so this gives him more time to keep on top of those. The rain over winter certainly brings things on, in leaps and bounds.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the current cold spell will soon pass – it is forecast to be around -5 or -6 degrees C over the next few days, and it certainly feels like it in the biting winds.
Roll on summer!
Menorca 2011
Here we are, November 2011 already!
What a fantastically busy summer season we have had. It seems so strange now to visit places such as Son Bou and not be surrounded by lots of people enjoying their summer holidays – more like a ghost town at the moment.
The weather was a bit of a mixed bag at the beginning of summer but then, once it had made its mind up to stick with the sunshine, we had lots of it – days on end of beautiful blue skies and temperatures well into the 30’s. We had plenty of visitors over summer, which was lovely, just a shame we weren’t also on holiday 🙂
Now we are already over half way through November with Christmas looming closer and closer. I love Christmas over here – none of the hype we are subjected to “back home” – makes a refreshing change and also means you don’t get brain-washed into thinking you need to spend far more than you need to. Wonder whether we’ll be able to sit outside on the patio to eat our Christmas dinner this year!
Menorca 2010
Wow, the summer season in Menorca is almost over already! Been quite a mixed bag, weather-wise, compared to last year anyway. I don’t think we saw a rain cloud from May – September last year whereas this year I think we have seen rain throughout the summer. Quite welcome at times though, given the temperatures!
Also coming to the end of our first year of “proper” Property Management – last year was more as favours for people. Been an eye-opener in more ways than one. How people treat others properties, whether they are happy with everything – or not! No two people are alike, obviously, and this certainly helps towards keeping us on our toes lol.
We have been extremely fortunate in the people whose properties we look after – lovely, lovely people, and a real pleasure to work with them this year, and hopefully next year too.
I’ve never done so much washing and ironing in my life – I reckon I have washed and ironed more in these last few months than I have done previously, over a lot of years! Thank goodness for my wonderful steam press (though I am still waiting for the delivery of the stand).
Today I am going for lunch at Bar Irenes in Calas Fons with one of our clients – we have been collecting the odd euros and cents found whilst cleaning and have actually managed to accumulate nearly enough to treat us lunch out – certainly won’t need to subsidise it much. It’s like a big Thank You for all the hard work this summer 🙂
Well, that’s about it for now – sure there is far more I could say but I will leave it at that for now.
Weather in Menorca over winter
Crikey, I cannot believe it was November when I last posted on here. We are now in February 2010 – where on earth has the time gone?
Well, weather-wise, as said in my last post, it has been a mixed bag. Strange really because apart from definitely winter, and definitely summer, there doesn’t seem to be much in between. It has been cold, very cold due to the wind, and damp, over the last couple of months and we even had snow for a day! It actually feels colder than it did back home in the UK alot of the time and this is apparently because it is such a little island and surrounded by water, so mix in the wind and it feels very cold and damp – goes right through to your bones.
The walls inside most of the villas, apartments etc. tend to suffer badly over winter and nearly everyone I speak to accepts that you need to get a few bottles of bleach, rubber gloves, scouring pads and start cleaning off the mildew which is very common.
Anyway, we have been fortunate enough to have had a few very nice days, especially when sheltered from the wind so fingers crossed things are starting to improve a bit. Certainly not as cold as it was and even our 10 little tortoises have all popped out to eat a bit of fresh greenery. I was a little worried that a few of them might have perished over winter but no, they all look absolutely fine and healthy.
August, September & October 2009
August was more of the same – very hot, very sunny – wonderful.
The weather did break in September and came as quite a shock to the system – much cooler, lots of rain and felt like we had been transported back to the UK!
October was a mixed bag, sunshine, wind, rain, warm and then cold – I suppose nothing unexpected really and certainly can’t complain given the continuous glorious sunshine and heat during the summer months.
July 2009
1st – 23rd July 2009
Apart from one or two little blips, so far the weather in Menorca for July has been hot, hot and very hot – a record of 5 times in the pool for me today in a vain attempt to cool down. Certainly not complaining, but does become a bit difficult to get motivated to do anything when it is this warm.
June 2009
17th June – 30th June 2009
The last day of June already – where has the month gone? Well, apart from 3-4 days when it was a mixture of clouds and strongish breeze (and I think there was a very brief shower) the month has been blisteringly hot – hotter than the norm for Menorca in June apparently. Even during the overcast days it was still very pleasant, temperature-wise, in fact it was a bit of a welcome respite. This morning when I checked the thermometer (in the direct sun) it was at 42 degrees C – thank goodness for swimming pools! See you in July.
16th June 2009 –
I have decided not to add daily updates unless anything changes dramatically (to avoid boring everyone). So, if there are no new entries you can take it that it is still lovely and sunny and warm and very enjoyable 🙂
15th June 2009
Sunshine all day but very humid too which made it feel very warm indeed. Still 27.8 at 9 p.m.!
14th June 2009
Very hard to remember just how cold and damp it was in November/December. Another beautiful day today – temperature currently 32.4 degrees C (8.25 p.m.)
13th June 2009
And another very, very warm day – broke out into a sweat just pushing a hoover around this morning – should have waited until after I had done it before I had my shower! Live and learn. Remained very warm for the whole day, so warm in fact that eating our tea in the bbq area, which is in the direct sunshine around 5-6 p.m. proved too much for me to cope with so I had to move back under the shade! Thermometer showing 25.7 degrees C at just gone 11 p.m.
12th June 2009
Yet more of the same – blue, blue skies, strong (and hot) sunshine and very little breeze. Gorgeous day and lovely evening.
11th June 2009
Another wonderful day here in Menorca – clear blue skies, lots of very warm sunshine – what more do you need? Sun just gone down and still 28.1 degrees C (9 p.m.).
10th June 2009
Getting a little repetitive now – another lovely day with plenty of sunshine. A slight breeze picked up in the afternoon and a few clouds appeared early evening.
9th June 2009
Lovely day, lots of sunshine and just a slight breeze. A few clouds around but nothing to worry about. Temperature currently around 28.8 degrees C at 5.50 p.m.
8th June 2009
Plenty of sunshine again today with a few clouds around but nothing major. A bit more of breeze making it feel slightly cooler than of late. Temperature currently showing 28.9 C in the sun (4.45 p.m.)
7th June 2009
Very short shower first thing, with a bit of accompanying thunder. Then the sun came out for the rest of the day – lots of gardening done.
6th June 2009
Very hot and sunny day, all day. Martin was doing some gardening for one of our customers whilst I did the weekly shop – went to pick him up and helped him finish off. Drove home and both in the pool 10 minutes later – bliss.
5th June 2009
And another lovely day with plenty of sunshine and few fluffy clouds floating around. Breeze was quite a bit stronger today and picked up more so during the evening, as did the cloud, but still very pleasant.
4th June 2009
Another superb day – lovely and warm and sunny but with a few more clouds around. Now quite a covering of cloud (7.15 p.m.) but not the menacing type! Still very warm – thermometer currently showing 27.6 degrees C.
3rd June 2009
Very sunny and very warm all day – slight breeze picked up during the day but only served to make it even more pleasant (and bearable in the direct sun!).
2nd June 2009
Happy Birthday Dad, wherever you are up there 🙂
Beautiful, beautiful day – very warm and not a cloud in the sky. Not sure exactly what the temperatures were as each one I look at seems to give a different reading. The one in the direct sun this morning, at around 9.30 a.m. showed 35 degrees C, and it certainly felt very hot. Still warm now at 10 past 11 at night – 22.3 degrees C.
1st June 2009
A mixture of cloud and sunshine, with more sun than cloud – feeling very warm in the direct sunshine and very little breeze.
May 2009
31st May 2009
Overcast for most of the day with steady rain. No breeze so still felt very mild – around mid 20’s.
30th May 2009
Another very hot and sunny day – thermometer was showing around 35 degrees C in the direct sunshine a couple of hours ago. Showing 25 degrees C in the shade. Too hot to sit out in it for very long.
29th May 2009Wind finally dropped which left a very sunny and very hot day. Not sure what the actual temperature was as I was out with my husband cleaning swimming pools but it felt extremely hot!
28th May 2009
Totally clear, blue skies but very blustery which made it feel quite alot cooler than of late. Breeze still going strong early evening though thermometer showing 20.1 C at 10.15 p.m. – not sure I believe it!
27th May 2009
Sunny and bright but with quite a gusty wind throughout most of the day. Did feel quite a bit cooler in the breeze, but definitely not unpleasant. Wind calmed down early evening and temperature currently showing 23.8 C (at 8.20 pm).
26th May 2009
A bit of a cloudy start to the day but soon gave way to blue skies and plenty of sunshine. Quite a strong breeze in certan areas but still very warm in the direct sunshine.
25th May 2009
Started off, very early, with clear blue skies but quickly became very cloudy for the rest of the day. Odd spells of sunshine, and still warm. Clouds disappeared again around 5-6 p.m. to leave a very pleasant evening.
24th May 2009
A very sunny and warm start to the day but thickening cloud arrived around lunchtime, very suddenly! Disappeared again about an hour later to leave another lovely day with a bit of breeze. Slightly cooler than the last few days but still very, very pleasant.
23rd May 2009
Very, very warm today – thermometer showing up to 32.8 degrees in the direct snshine and with very little breeze, it felt VERY hot. Put the thermometer on the subed late afternoon and it shot up to 45 degrees so can only think it was the heat o the sunbed matress which was making it rise so dramatically – though it was hot generally!
22nd May 2009
A lot more cloud around today but still very warm. A bit of a breeze but not upleasant. Temperatures well into the late 20’s/early 30’s.
21st May 2009
Nothing new to report – more sunshine and high temperatures with a bit of a breeze – another lovely day in Menorca.
20th May 2009
More sun, more high temperatures – thermometer was still showing around 32 degrees C in the direct sun at about 6 p.m. A bit more of a breeze, which was very welcome!
19th May 2009
Very sunny, very hot – crikey – what is July and August going to be like? Very little breeze today which made it very, very warm in the direct sunlight.
18th May 2009
And another beautiful day – a bit of a misty start but it didn’t hang around for long, then clear blue skies and just a slight breeze. Very warm in the direct sun.
17th May 2009
Another lovely sunny, warm day. There were a few more clouds about but nothing which prevented the sun’s rays from breaking through for most of the day. Temperature at the moment showing 25.6 degrees C (6.40 p.m.).
16th May 2009
Beautiful sunny and warm day with barely a cloud to be seen. Our thermometer was showing 30 degrees + in the direct sunshine.
15th May 2009
Much windier today and feeling quite a lot cooler than the last few days. Temperatures around 18-19 degrees C maximum. Wind and clouds decreased by late afternoon.
14th May 2009
A bit like yesterday’s weather with sunshine during the morning and cloud thickening during the afternoon/evening. A light shower in the evening with a bit heavier rain during the night, though apparently there was a lot more rain elsewhere on the island.
13th May 2009
A lovely sunny and warm start to the day with increasing cloud during the afternoon. Felt rather humid by late afternoon/early evening and we did think we were in for some rain, but it didn’t appear.
12th May 2009
Plenty of sunshine during the morning but then alot of cloud around in the afternoon and evening. Still nice and warm though.
11th May 2009
Quite a misty start to the day and a little more breeze than the last few days. Mist cleared quickly to leave another lovely sunny and warm day.
10th May 2009
Quite a bit more cloud around today though only a very thin layer. Sun coming out, on and off, throughout the day. Still nice and warm – warm enough to have Sunday luch outside on the patio.
9th May 2009
And another lovely day. A little bit more cloud around today so the sun didn’t feel quite so intense, as it has the last couple of day, but still, very, very nice – felt a bit humid at times.
8th May 2009
Another very sunny and very warm day, with hardly any breeze. Judging by the colour of my arms and shoulders, I think I spent a little too long outside gardening!
7th May 2009
Very sunny, very warm, very little breeze – another fabulous day.
6th May 2009
Beautiful sunny day and very warm. Not much else I can say really.
5th May 2009
Looked a bit black and a few drops of rain first thing but the wind soon blew the clouds away. Another sunny day but pretty windy, which did make it feel quite a bit cooler. Temp in the shade is showing 18.5 degrees C at the moment (4.30 p.m.) so not bad really.
4th May 2009
Another lovely day but a bit more breezy than yesterday. Still lovely and warm in the sunshine – up to around 22-23 degrees C.
3rd May 2009
Well this was our moving day and what a glorious day, possibly the warmest yet this year – just what you need when you are lugging big boxes around! Not complaining though. At nearly 8 p.m. the temperature outside is still showing 22 degrees C.
2nd May 2009
A bright and sunny day but still quite a cool breeze though lovely and warm if sheltered from it. Temperatures anywhere between 17-23 (ish) degrees C.
1st May 2009
Oh what a night! Extremely loud thunder and spectacular lightening, as well as lots and lots of rain. Rain continuining into the morning but eventually cleared up by mid/late morning. The afternoon had plenty of sunshine but quite a strong breeze which did make it feel fairly cool.
April 2009
30th April 2009
Last day of April and what a lovely one. Clear blue skies with very little breeze. Temperatures around 25-26 degrees C for most of the day.
29th April 2009
Clear blue skies all day, with only the odd patch of fluffy white clouds floating by occasionally. The breeze was a little chilly at times which made the heat and strength of the sun rather deceiving – I now have red arms and legs to prove it.
28th April 2009
Cloudy for most of the day, with the odd glimpse of the sun. Still feeling warm enough to sit outside with temperatures ranging from 19-21 degrees C. Skies cleared by late afternoon to give a lovely clear and starlit evening.
27th April 2009
More sunshine and clouds with quite a cool breeze. Lovely when the sun came out but felt a bit chilly when it disappeared back behind the clouds.
26th April 2009
A mixture of sunshine and clouds, depending on where you were! Sunny in Es Castell during the afternoon but just beyond Sant Climent it was very cloudy with a few hints that the sun was there somewhere. Temperature in shade showing 20.8 (at 5 p.m.) so still very pleasant.
25th April 2009
Alot more cloud around today with only a few glimpses of the sun. Still fairly mild though and not unpleasant.
24th April 2009
Another beautiful day with plenty of very warm sunshine around. Not sure what the actual temperature was but it was hot enough to burn if out in it for too long. Slight breeze but very pleasant.
23rd April 2009
What a fabulous day – best one this year so far. Temperatures still around 21-22 degrees C in the shade (at 7.45 p.m.). A bit breezy but actually quite welcome today in the heat of the sun!
22nd April 2009
Not a bad day but far windier that it has been lately, making it feel a bit cooler. A mixture of sunshine and clouds throughout the day. Temperatures reaching around 18 degrees C in the shade.
21st April 2009
A very wet and miserable start to the day but the clouds soon parted and the sun came out. Lovely for the rest of the day but quite a strong breeze.
20th April 2009
A lovely warm and sunny morning with clouds increasing during the afternoon. By around tea-time the heavens opened, giving us the works. Torrential rain, thunder, lightening and hailstone!
19th April 2009
Beautiful day with barely a cloud to be seen. In the direct sunshine our thermometer showed temperatures of around 31-32 degrees C.
18th April 2009
Another sunny, bright day with temperatures reaching up to 20 degrees C in the shade. A few spots of rain late afternoon though I believe there were a couple of heavy downpours in other areas of the island.
17th April 2009
Plenty of sunshine and blue sky with temperatures ranging from 16 – 20 degrees C (in the shade). Bit of a breeze but nothing untoward!
16th April 2009
Another sunny day with only one or two fluffy white clouds floating by – rather quickly because of the fairly strong breeze! Temperatures much the same as yesterday.
15th April 2009
A lovely sunny start to the day with temperatures throughout the day ranging between 17 – 20 degrees C. Very dark clouds appeared for a while midday(ish) and I understand there were some very heavy showers, though not here in Es Castell. During the evening/night there was, however, plenty of rain about but this had cleared by morning.
14th April 2009
Woke up to brilliant blue skies and sunshine, which remained for the whole of the day. A bit of a breeze which did make it feel slightly cooler if not sheltered. Temperatures in the shade showing between 17-19 degrees C.
13th April 2009
A very grey and wet early start to the day but the forecast was for better things and, as promised, the rain stopped and the sun came out pretty early on in the day. Quite a breeze which did make it feel slightly cooler but generally a very nice day.
12th April 2009
A very grey and damp day. Also quite cold but that didn’t put us off enjoying a BBQ and then a very competitive egg rolling race – well done Max.
11th April 2009
A mixture of sunshine and clouds with quite a strong breeze. Very pleasant though with temperatures ranging between 19-23 degees C.
10th April 2009
Mainly sunny but odd spells of cloudiness. Nice and warm in the direct sunshine though the breeze did make it feel cooler if you were in an unsheltered area. Lovely day.
9th April 2009
Very wet and miserable during the morning but cleared up over lunchtime with plenty of sunshine during the afternoon. Quite breezy.
8th April 2009
Cloudy start to the day but cleared up and turned into a lovely warm day again.
7th April 2009
Plenty of sunshine for most of the day. Clouded over around 4ish and felt quite alot cooler because of the breeze.
6th April 2009
Lots of sunshine with hardly a cloud in sight. Breeze quite cool though which took me by surprise – wished I’d taken a cardi/jacket with me on our visit to Mahon.
5th April 2009
Beautiful sunny and warm day, so nice in fact, that we had Sunday lunch outside, complete with Christmas Pudding(!) which my daughter kindly brought across with her. Lovely afternoon with all the family, and one or two glasses of wine. Temperature around 26/27 degrees C.
4th April 2009
Sunshine and a couple of showers first thing and then things just got better. Sunshine for most of the day with a few clouds occasionally getting in the way. So nice we spent a lovely couple of hours on the beach at Es Grau.
3rd April 2009
Another rainy day with some quite heavy showers at times. Finally started brightening up by mid-late afternoon with the sun making brief appearances for the remainder of the day.
2nd April 2009
Will it every stop? Well it did for a short time around 2.30 p.m. and then rained on and off for the rest of the afternoon/evening, with short spells of glorious sunshine in between – hopefully a sign of things to come in the next few days!
1st April 2009
Yet more rain. A very grey and damp day with a couple of very short-lived sightings of the sunshine.
